Aquarius Energy is proud to announce that Axfaltec in Mexico, has been shortlisted for the Global Tank Storage Awards 2025 in the prestigious “Excellence in Health and Safety” category.
This nomination recognises Axfaltec’s unwavering commitment to safety, embedded in its organisational culture and driven by leadership, assurance, and continual improvement.
Axfaltec’s Commitment to Health and Safety
At Axfaltec, safety is more than just a priority—it is a core value that defines our operational mindset.
Axfaltec’s approach to safety has resulted in measurable improvements in our HSEC performance, reflected in reduced incident rates, increased compliance with regulatory standards, and greater stakeholder confidence in dealing with emergency situations.
For example, the number of near misses decreased from 10 in 2021 to 0 in 2024, the latter being the lowest year in Axfaltec’s history.
Driving Emergency Response Excellence
Following internal benchmarking and assurance reviews, Axfaltec identified the need to accelerate improvements in emergency response capabilities.
In response, they launched a comprehensive training programme, setting new standards for emergency preparedness and response effectiveness.
As a result, Axfaltec embarked on a programme of enhanced training for responders, developing systematic response one-pagers and creating training videos and video records to ensure improvements could be tracked to closure.
By simulating real-world scenarios of major accident hazards in Axfaltec’s drill programme, the terminal is now equipping our team with the tools, experience, and training needed to control potentially critical events effectively.
Leadership plays a pivotal role in these exercises, with senior staff setting the “tone from the top” and evaluating team performance through self-verification of the drills.
This fosters a proactive, continual improvement mindset across all levels of the organisation.
Post-drill evaluations using video and written verification records engage all employees in a thorough review process, where responses are scrutinised to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
This collaborative approach ensures that every staff member, from operators to leadership, contributes to the terminal’s safety journey.
It also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to learning from every experience and translating those lessons into actionable improvements.

These emergency response video materials have also inspired other teams within the Aquarius Energy organisation to replicate safety best practices in their own non-routine operations.
